Me, me, me and I
Hold on to your hymnals...this one may get a little preachy.
So often when I talk to people and really get into what's going on in their lives, I see their mouths moving, but all I hear coming out is "Me, me, me," and "I, I, I." And I don't mean just because they're the kind of people who like to talk about themselves. I mean because they're the kind of people who like to LIVE for themselves. Only themselves.
They're the ones who want to be good Christians, but they wait for someone else to volunteer to organize the church fundraiser. They "love" animals, but can't be put out to open their homes to a stray, even for a short period of time. They call the city to send someone to pick up the trash dumped on their street. They complain about their kid's soccer coach, but are too busy to get out and volunteer in the league.
Don't get me wrong. I can be as self-centered as anyone. But what these people don't get is all the joy in their lives they're missing out on. They think it's about inconvenience, and hard work. They couldn't be more wrong.
So often these same "Me, me, me," people will be the same ones to tell you they aren't totally happy, aren't totally fulfilled, if you get to know them well enough that they'll be honest with you. Perhaps they don't have that many friends outside their families, or the relationships they do have are a bit shallow. Maybe they sometimes wonder if there's more to life than going to work and feeding the kids.
What they don't realize is that the more you give your blessings to others, the more blessing you receive. You just plain feel better. If you get involved, you'll have more friends, I guarantee it. And those friendships will be deeper and more heartfelt than any others because of what you've been through together. What you've accomplished together.
I volunteer with no less than 4 non-profit organizations. And through the work I've done with those groups, I've met people I would walk through fire for--as I think they would for me. I've had days where I left the house so stressed over what was going on my life that I could hardly think straight. And come home with a smile on my face and a heart light as air. I've accomplished things I never thought I could, and for it, my confidence and self-esteem have benefitted.
Want to feel better about yourself and the world you live in? Get involved. Do something for someone else. You will reap the results. Find the thing you're passionate about--animals, kids, the community, the environment--and find a way to help. It will make you feel better than that massage you were planning. Or the manicure. Or TV show you absolutely must watch.
In a way, volunteering is all about you, too. It's about the way it will make you feel and the way it will change your outlook on life.
Come on. Do it!
Until next time,
Vickie

Wow, just thinking about volunteering for four organizations makes me tired. LOL! I do know what you mean, though, and you have definitely provided food for thought.
